Driven by a passionate love of humanity and committed to social progress and reform

The School Spirit of Nihon Fukushi University

Our university aims at producing people with ambition, who are moved by the hardships of these troubled times and compelled by a spirit of benevolence, mercy, and fraternity, to undertake the reform and advancement of society. To attain such a goal, mere scholarly pursuits or the desire for self-advancement would not be sufficient. Our university must be devoted to academic tradition and driven by a passionate love of humanity.

Proving our school’s worth in these difficult times

This is a period of great hardship in the lives of the Japanese people.

Various policies have been proposed in order to deal with unemployment and other problems faced by our country. These policies must not be temporary or partial measures, but rather “national reform” in Japan for the 21st century. For that purpose, we must go beyond the narrow meaning of “welfare” and pursue a broader and deeper “well-being” that covers all the areas impacting the lives of the people of our nation, including finance, economics, and culture. Our desire is to train students who have the passion and the skills for that mission. It is time to demonstrate our true value as an educational organization with a university and other institutions dedicated to “well-being” —fukushi in Japanese.

Nihon Fukushi University, which will soon be celebrating its sixtieth anniversary, has expanded to the point where it now has over 13,000 students attending its schools, including correspondence courses, vocational colleges, and affiliated high schools, in addition to the regular school curriculum. With our exceptional track record, including the symbolic legacy of 65,000 graduates nationwide and the continuous adoption of special assistance from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, we have renewed our resolution to put every effort into cultivating “people of ambition who will undertake the reform and advancement of society” (Shugaku Suzuki, School Founder).

We greatly appreciate your continued support and understanding.

Message from the President

Let the spirit of well-being bloom through mutual support and practical learning.

In order to become a comprehensive university dedicated to well-being (fukushi), Nihon Fukushi University has devoted itself to substantial development in three areas: Health and Healthcare (life), Welfare and Economics (livelihood), and Education and Development (purpose). In 2011, we further increased our activities with the creation of a new campus for Japan’s oldest Faculty of Social Welfare and our Faculty of Economics, which is related to welfare. The Faculties of Health Science, Child Development, and International Welfare Development were established in 2008; and by joining forces with our Faculty of Healthcare Management (Correspondence Course), which combines healthcare, welfare and management, we are continuously pursuing “well-being and happiness for all people.”

Speaking to all newly-enrolled students, it is my wish that our students acquire these four abilities: the ability to focus, to sympathize, to connect, and to communicate. This goal can be reached through practical learning and a spirit of mutual support (the original intention in founding our university), and through seminars, lectures, club participation and volunteer activities both in the community and in the classroom. I want you to set your own goals and establish your own course and let the spirit of well-being bloom inside you. We, your instructors, have your post-graduation careers in mind and are here to support you in every way possible.

Sachio Kato, President
